A large fire has broken out in the roof of Notre-Dame cathedral in central Paris.
The medieval cathedral on the Ile de la Cité in the heart of the French capital is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world.
It was begun in the 12th century and has recently been undergoing renovation. The spire at the back of the cathedral and much of the roof could be seen engulfed in flames at 7:45pm local time.
Anne Hidalgo, Paris mayor, said a “terrible fire” was under way at the building.
